Semana 8 - Arrived in Guatemala City

Semana 8

July 6, 2022

Oh boy. So we got here in Guatemala on Thursday.  Flying in was beautiful.  It's super green and there are volcanos everywhere.  We stayed the night in a hotel and they fed us some basic Guatemalan food, eggs, beans, chicken, and tortillas.  In the morning we were shipped off to our different areas and we met our companions and were briefed a little bit about what it's gonna be like here.  Then we were sent back to where we live.  So right now I'm serving in the Santa Maria area, Palmita district, Zone Pal-Central, Guatemala City Mission.  Still don't know what any of that means, other than the fact we have the nicest apartment in the mission, which is pretty sweet.  We've got hot water and a washing machine, which is utter luxury here.  So we plan out what were going to do each day, and then we basically go do it.  For example, yesterday we went and met some people on the street, found two people that are interested and handed out a Book of Mormon.  Later we went and taught a really nice old lady in her home about the atonement of Jesus Christ, and she was so receptive and kind.  She gave us "aguas" after, which is slang for soda.  Tons of slang here.  One of the most common is que tal, which is like what's up.  From there we walked to the church to play ping pong with 2 members and 3 investigators, and after ping pong we had a lesson, and it went super well. These people are all awesome. The only problem is that I can't understand what they're saying.  Leaving the MTC I thought I could have conversations with people.  Wrong.  People try to talk to me, then look at my companion and say me no entiende, (he doesn't understand me) and then proceed to talk with Elder Jenson.  So that's tough, but in all my free time I'm studying Spanish, so hopefully I pick it up quickly.   The guys here say it took them 2 transfers (12 weeks) to understand what people were saying.  But I'm working hard at it and I hope to see progress by week 3.  The hardest part is that I want to share the things I know to be true, the whole reason I'm here!   But I can't understand what anyone is saying.  But with time I know I'll pick it up.  Pretty busy all the time, but not as busy as I want to be.  I want to work till I drop, but I can't until I can talk with people.  But today were going to hang out as a district and check out zone 1 of the city, which is where most the stores are so that'll be fun.  But I hope everyone has a great week.  God bless.
